clip boardA description of Tena's treatment: Prior to your first visit you will fill out a comprehensive health questionnaire to be discussed with your acupuncturist during the initial evaluation. Treatments are most effective when the regimen is very exact to address the whole person's physical, emotional and spiritual condition. This will be explained during the evaluation and treatment process.

In a nutshell, every aspect of the person has an influence on the body and treatment success is optimized when the "root" cause is addressed with a comprehensive approach. We use acupuncture, hot stone medical massage techniques, nutrition and herbal medicine to accomplish this goal. This approach is unique, most acupuncturists do not incorporate medical massage techniques. We will tackle your condition together, resolve it if possible, and develop a defensive program to optimize your health and prevent future problems. Your desire, cooperation and participation are essential
to success.

For Example: A patient came to our office with sudden onset of ringing in the left ear after a minor auto accident. She has a history of occasional ringing in the ears over the last few years, lasting only a few seconds. She saw her medical doctor who found "nothing wrong" and prescribed anti-inflammatory agents and a drug to improve circulation to the ear. Neither helped, and he was suggesting a direct injection of steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs directly into the deep ear canal. My patient was afraid of permanent damage to the ear and wanted to have an evaluation and take a natural approach to her problem.

Tena did an evaluation of the patients posture and felt of the neck, shoulders and head of the patient. All were very tight and tender to the touch, especially at the base of the skull. It made sense that the auto accident jarred this area and the tension and constriction are affecting the nerves and blood flow to the ear. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) each sense organ has an associated organ system. The ears are associated with the kidneys. The patient was amazed and reported that she has had a weak renal system all of her life resulting in multiple kidney infections and bladder issues. She also has a weakness in the low back and knee pain which also fall under kidney symptoms. She is fatigued, sleep is disturbed and her stress level is high. The treatment approach was very clear:

  • Release tension in the head, neck, shoulders and low back to facilitate healing in the ear. This is done with acupuncture and hot stone medical massage incorporating many advanced "hands on" techniques.
  • Evaluate diet, vitamin regimen, rest and exercise to assure proper nutrition isavailable for the body to repair itself.
  • Tailor the acupuncture treatment to address all issues: Points for improving ear function, relieving tension in the upper body, strengthening kidneys and low back, strengthening core vitality so that the body will restore its own innate balance, relieving stress and supporting sleep.
  • Advise patient to wear ear coverings when outdoors, especially in the cold and wind, avoid loud noise and get at least ast 7 hours of sleep .Drink 8 glasses of water daily and minimize drying agents such as coffee, alcohol, and especially sinus medications.
  • Employ an exercise, stretching and supplement regimen to strengthen the core, optimize health and put up a strong defense against future problems after symptoms have subsided

Treatment regimen was employed twice a week until desired results were obtained. After the first treatment the stress reaction was reduced and coping mechanisms restored, ringing slightly improved and she felt better overall. Ringing in the ears gradually improved over the next three weeks as the low back got stronger, energy improved and sleep was restored. After six weeks of treatment, the constant ear ringing subsided, ears were still sensitive to loud noise and wind, which has been the case for the last few years. We felt her auto accident triggered a problem in a weak area. A defensive strategy was employed to address a constitutional weakness in the
kidney system.

Stones on the beach Hot Stone Medical Massage

Innovative Healing Center has developed a unique therapeutic version of hot stone massage using heated, smooth rocks. Most other hot stone treatments are light touch and soothing with placement of the stones on various points
of the body.

We use stones as a tool to enhance our therapeutic, medical treatment. Our therapists are trained in over 80 different types of massages and are skilled clinicians that tailor treatments to meet your needs and tolerance.
A variety of modalities and advanced medical massage techniques are used in combination
to get powerful healing results.

Our massages are results oriented and personalized to address your specific condition.  Proven techniques applied may include Trigger Point Therapy, Myofascial Release, Neuromuscular Therapy, Active Release Technique and Craniosacral Therapy, among others. Best results are obtained by adding acupuncture to address the core issue once it is isolated.
Hot stone massage is a variation on classic massage therapy. Heated smooth, flat stones are held in the palm of the massage therapist as he/she massages the body. The stones become an extension of the therapist’s hands to address specific areas of tension and muscle knots.
The hot stones are usually made of basalt, a type of rock that is rich in iron, so they retain heat. River rocks are normally used because they are so smooth - they have become smooth over time by the river's current.

The warmth of the hot stones is very comforting and relaxes the tissues much faster than the therapist’s hands alone. Muscle tension melts away and the “healing experience” is profound.   The heat warms and relaxes the muscles, which allows the therapist to apply deeper pressure and release techniques more effectively. The warmth of the hot stones improves circulation and calms the nervous system.

Essential oils may be used to further accomplish our goal. There are oils for calming, energizing, healing injuries, promoting immunity, improving circulation and reducing edema. The therapist will make suggestions and the patient decides whether to add oils to the treatment.

The stones are immersed in water and heated in an electric heating device that has an adjustable thermostat. The temperature is controlled to assure comfort and safety. The massage therapist always holds the stones first before touching them to your body, which ensures that the temperature will not be too hot. Everyone, however, has their own comfort range. Be sure to speak up if the stones are too hot for you. You also determine the pressure and depth of massage based on preference.
Cool marble stones are occasionally used during a treatment, particularly if there is inflammation.

Massage is not recommended for certain people:

  • People with infectious skin disease, rash, or
    open wounds
  • Immediately after surgery
  • Immediately after chemotherapy or radiation, unless recommended by your doctor
  • People prone to blood clots. There is a risk of blood clots being dislodged. If you have heart disease, check with your doctor before having a massage.
  • Pregnant women should check with their doctor first if they are considering getting a massage. Massage in pregnant women should be done by massage therapists who are certified in pregnancy massage.
  • Massage should not be done directly over bruises, inflamed skin, unhealed wounds, tumors, abdominal hernia, or areas of recent fractures.

strawberry and orange Nutritional Programs

Diet, nutrition and lifestyle are the basics of good health. The five pillars of health are a healthy diet, sufficient exercise, adequate rest and relaxation, a positive mental attitude, and a fulfilling spiritual practice.

The fundamental theory in Traditional Chinese Medicine is: “When a person is sick the doctor should first regulate the patient’s diet and lifestyle.”  Internal support with herbs, vitamins, minerals, enzymes, amino acids and other natural supplements help to achieve and maintain good health. We simply do not typically get all of these elements in our diets. Therapeutic nutrition is a must to support your vital organs and health!  Programs are gentle and effective and produce lasting effects.  We promise to accomplish this goal with foods when possible and a minimum number of products.
